#2 Martin D-28 Marquis | DADGAD Folk Song

I started a new series on youtube in which I play 52 guitars in one year. On Monday, I post a new song with the week’s instrument. On Wednesday, I make a review on the guitar, and I teach the actual tune on Friday. This is the second week. The guitar is one of mine, a 2012 Martin D-28 Marquis.

I found a very cool blues shuffle groove on Ben Smith’s youtube channel in DADGAD tuning. I had an idea to put a Hungarian folk melody on the top of it.

The Marquis series was discontinued in 2017. The Marquis was a more affordable but still higher-end version of Martin’s other series, Golden Era. Both lines had the specs of the pre-war Martin guitars, but Marquis had East Indian rosewood back and sides instead of the more expensive Madagaskar rosewood. Now Martin has a series made in the Custom Shop called Authentic, which are correct replicas of some specific pre-war Martin models found in the Martin Museum. Those guitars don’t have adjustable truss rods. They have T-bars in their necks as the old guitars.

First of all, an adjustable truss rod is a must. As a world-touring musician, I can’t live without it. Secondly, I prefer East Indian Rosewood’s sound compared to Madagascar rosewood. In this case, more expensive is not always better. It is a case of taste. The D-28 Marquis is one of the best dreadnoughts I’ve ever played. This guitar fits my needs on every level. I like the Adirondack too. It brings an exciting quality to the sound. The sound is still mellow but brighter mellow than with a Sitka top.

Additionally, the neck feels incredible on this guitar. It is a Modified V-shaped neck that feels perfect. Here is my video review.
